This Astral Silver wagon traveled from California to Michigan in December 2018 for a restoration inspection. The restoration process began in April 2018 with dismantling and cataloging the entire vehicle. The exterior and engine bay was stripped to bare metal and small rust areas, like the door bottoms, were repaired. Several coats of epoxy primer were applied, the weld seams were coated with sealant, and period correct undercoating was applied to the undercarriage. Once all of the surfaces were aligned, block sanded and prepped the original Astral Silver paint was applied to all of the surfaces. The interior wood trim was completely restored while all of the chrome was either replaced or re-chromed. The interior was completely restored with all new materials, notably the original plaid fabric that was special ordered for all of the seats. The rear hatch, all four doors, sunroof, and folding third row seats were all carefully rebuilt. All of the suspension and driveline components were restored and reinstalled. The engine was stripped down to the block, resealed and rebuilt with its original but newly plated hardware. The newly restored wagon was sent home to the golden state in December 2020, just in time for Christmas!
It was an honor to restore this tired but well loved old wagon, which we called Edward. The clock has been turned back to 1984 for this silver wagon and we hope that he will be an ambassador of the era for many decades to come.
